If You Say Lagos Real Estate Is a Scam? Bring Your Money and Build It Cheaper

Once upon a time in Lagos, there was a man named Edwards. Smart guy. Worked in tech. Lived in Yaba. He’d saved up for three years and was finally ready to buy land to build his dream home.

But then came the whispers.

“Don’t buy land in Lagos o. It’s a scam!”

“Developers are thieves!”

“You can build it cheaper by yourself.”

Edwards paused. He listened. He believed them.

So, he took the bold route: he’d find the land himself, manage the building himself, and avoid those “scammers” called developers.

His journey began in a dusty corner of Oniru, Lagos. Land was cheap. Sellers were plenty. The papers looked “okay,” and he got a “good deal.” First payment made.

Then came omo onile. They showed up like guests you didn’t invite — asking for “settlement” every step of the way. Foundation level? Pay. Roofing level? Pay. Block delivery? Pay again. Before he knew it, he’d paid more in “settlements” than the price of the land itself.

He hadn’t even poured a full deck.

Next came the rains. No drainage. The road? A nightmare. Materials were delayed, prices went up, the mason vanished mid-project, and the new one wanted to start from scratch. And of course, his “cheap” land turned out to be under dispute. Hello, court case.

By year three, Edwards had aged twice as fast and still had no house. Meanwhile, his friend Ayo had bought a property from a verified real estate company called Definition Properties Limited in Gbagada, Lagos. No court drama. No omo onile. Ayo simply paid and built — with a title, a receipt, and peace of mind.

Moral of the Story?

Lagos real estate is not a scam. But you can definitely scam yourself by thinking you’re smarter than the system.

Can you build it cheaper? Maybe. But can you build it faster, safer, more securely, and with legal backing?

That’s the real question.

So the next time someone says, “Lagos real estate is a scam,” ask them:

“Oya now, bring your money and build it cheaper — let’s see how far you’ll go.”

Or better still, save yourself the stress. Buy from a trusted source. Work with professionals. And secure your future with wisdom — not with street arguments.

Welcome to Lagos — the land of opportunity, if you play your cards right.
